Electrical Stimulation (E-STIM)

What is Electrical Stimulation?

Electrical stimulation (e-stim) is a non-invasive treatment used to reduce pain, improve muscle function, and support recovery. Small electrodes are placed on the skin to deliver controlled electrical pulses that stimulate muscles and nerves in the targeted area.

At Fitness Physio, our therapists use Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to interrupt pain signals, reduce discomfort, and promote muscle relaxation. The result is less pain, improved movement, and a faster return to activity.

FAQs

Are there different types of electrical stimulation?

Yes. Fitness Physio primarily uses TENS for pain management. Other forms, like iontophoresis, are used to deliver medication through the skin and require a prescription.

How does electrical stimulation work?

Electrodes placed on the skin deliver mild electrical pulses that stimulate nerves and muscles, creating a light tingling sensation while reducing pain signals.

How long are electrical stimulation sessions?

Electrical stimulation sessions typically last 5-15 minutes, depending on the treatment plan.

Do I need a prescription for electrical stimulation?

No prescription is required for TENS. This is the primary form of electrical stimulation used at Fitness Physio. Other forms of electrical stimulation, like iontophoresis, may require one.

Does electrical stimulation hurt?

Electrical stimulation is typically not painful. Most clients feel a mild tingling or pulsing sensation, but the treatment is comfortable and well-tolerated.
